Tecovas Boots for Equestrians: A Review of Quality and Performance

Finding a pair of boots as an equestrian is no easy task. With so many things to consider – including quality, comfort, durability, and performance – equestrians can spends hours (and dollars) trying to find a brand that checks all of their needs. In this post, we’ll take a look at Tecovas Boots for Equestrians.

There is one thing I must admit: I have been trained in hunters and dressage. But although I can’t claim cowgirl title, I have spent the past few years working as a horse trail guide… which requires a good pair of either work boots or western boots to support the strenuous hours.

After my last pair of Ariats literally fell apart (I can’t even verbally stress how bad they looked) due to no fault of their own, I decided it was time to be in the market for a new pair. And just before I re-purchased the Ariats I already had, I decided to branch out and try the boots everyone (equestrians and wannabe’s alike) have been raving about: Tecovas.

I stopped by a Tecovas shop here in Tennessee and was immediately approached by an employee who spent well over 30 minutes trying to find me the perfect pair. After much consideration, I finally settled on the Annies.

The Style

When looking for the perfect pair of boots, style was a high priority. Especially as an English rider (who doesn’t ride western besides on the trails), I wanted my boots to be purposeful between both the barn and everyday wear. This is what originally made me gravitate toward Tecovas.

These boots are obviously catered for the western style, however, I really believe they can be functional for other fashion aesthetics as well: between a more cozy vibe or even cool-girl with the right pant.

As for the equestrian side, the Annies do have that traditional appeal, while still being notable to others. The one down side – in my opinion – is that the heel of the boot is higher than what I was looking for, as I’m sure other equestrians can relate to. But really, Tecovas checks all of the boxes for style: the color, structure, shape… all of it.

The Comfort

Tecovas boots are generally known for being comfortable right out of the box; nonetheless, I was impressed that this lived up to standard. With the first three wears, I did have some rubbing on my heels, but this was masked with simply a bandaid to prevent friction – after, I didn’t experience any discomfort.

The boots that I went with are made of goat leather, which was incredibly supple compared to the already-supple cowhide material. This definitely helped with breaking in and making the long hours a little more enjoyable.

The Performance

These boots are built to last. And buying them during the muddy winter months was less than ideal, but they have kept their shine despite the harsh conditions. The soles are sturdy and the stitching is well-done, however, I have found that there isn’t much ankle support – especially running through the field chasing horses.

As said, they have a slightly higher heel and structured toe, which can be beneficial for riding. The soles are also smooth which allows the foot to easily come out of the stirrup if necessary.

Final Thoughts

I would recommend Tecovas for the everyday equestrian. Though they aren’t made for rigorous work and conditions, they are such a good option for the cowgirl who wants both capability and aesthetics. So whether you’re mucking out stalls or going on a coffee run, definitely look into these boots!

Tell me, what are your fav boots + do you have any additional thoughts on Tecovas?

All the best,
Laura
